Designing a decorative watering can to celebrate an anniversary

Quench is a stainless steel watering can that is equally decorative as it is functional. Rust-proof and made of stainless-steel Quench has a high-polish finish and is durable to wear. With a 1L capacity, 360-degree handle, and semi-open top this watering can is simple to re-fill and easy to reach tough angles. Quench’s unique silhouette can be displayed and shown off on a window ledge or shelf thanks to its original and contemporary design.

For Umbra’s 40th anniversary, an open brief was issued to the design team across categories for a decorative watering can. The product was under a tight timeline to be available for retail in under 1 year.

Knowing that the timeline would not afford injection mold tooling, I limited my concept sketches to designs that could be made from simple welded metal construction. Referencing the manufacturing processes of common watering cans, I wanted to create an iconic form by reducing the form to only the necessary parts - handle, spout, and body.
